In the bleak midwinter is a carol, based on a poem by Christina Rossetti from 1872. The carol became known by the music of Gustav Holst, first published in The English Hymnal in 1906. The text describes a very traditional birth of Christ in the month December: snow, ice, frost, the ox and ass and a stable in Bethlehem.
